EPC on a Volkswagen group dashboard stands for Electronic Power Control: the system responsible for the car's throttle, ignition and related engine functions. In plain terms: the accelerator pedal talks to a computer, the computer talks to the throttle, and something in that conversation has gone wrong.

Is it the check engine light?
No. The EPC light is specific to the power control system; the check engine light (MIL) covers broader engine and emissions faults. The two can appear together when a throttle fault has knock-on effects. Either way the diagnostic route is the same: read the fault codes OBD-Codes.
First steps, in order
