The Electronic Product Code is a universal identifier managed by GS1, the standards body behind the barcode, giving every physical object its own unique identity GS1. It is most commonly carried on RAIN RFID (UHF) tags, which is why warehouses can inventory a shelf without line of sight: readers collect hundreds of EPCs a second from tagged items.

EPC versus GTIN
The GTIN (the number inside a retail barcode) identifies a product class: every unit of the same product shares one. The EPC identifies an individual instance. The bridge between them is the SGTIN scheme: a GTIN plus a serial number, encoded per GS1's EPC Tag Data Standard GS1 TDS. That serialisation is what enables item-level use cases a barcode cannot touch: authentication, precise recalls, item-level stock accuracy, and the self-checkout that reads a basket in one pass.
What the Tag Data Standard defines
The TDS specifies how identities are encoded into tag memory and expressed as URIs: header, filter and partition fields, then the company prefix, item reference and serial GS1 TDS. Beyond SGTIN it defines schemes for logistics units (SSCC), locations (SGLN), returnable assets (GRAI) and more, so the same identity system runs from factory to shelf GS1.
